2019 International Energy Workshop
The 38th edition of the International Energy Workshop (IEW) was hosted by the International Energy Agency, Paris, France, on June 03–05, 2019.
About International Energy Agency
The
International Energy Agency (IEA) is the global energy authority,
providing data, analysis and solutions on all fuels and all
technologies; helping governments, industries and citizens to make good
energy choices. Through its gold standard modelling tools, the IEA
examines the full spectrum of energy issues ranging from medium-term
(Market Reports on oil, gas, coal, renewable, energy efficiency) to
long-term (World Energy Outlook) as well as looking into technologies
(Energy Technology Perspectives) and system integration questions.
Call for Papers - The deadline for paper submission was February 1st, 2019
Researchers
and practitioners from countries around the world are invited to submit
original papers with new and innovative results on scientific,
technical and practical experience on the economics of energy and
climate systems. As is customary for the IEW, papers should be
quantitative and rigorous. A (non-exclusive) list of potential
conference topics is:
• Reaching net-zero emissions:
modelling the transition away from fossil fuels; sectoral modelling
enhancements and linking NDCs with long-term decarbonisation strategies
• SDGs: Modelling the interlinkage between energy systems and meeting sustainable development goals
• Socioeconomic analysis of the energy transitions: employment, skills, health, investments, consumer bills, integrating behaviour in energy models
• Emerging markets: modelling future energy service demand and related material demand for the energy sector in transition
• Technology insights:
role of technologies in the energy transitions (e.g. CCUS and negative
emission technologies, hydrogen, energy efficiency in demand and
supply)
• Managing power system transitions:
addressing flexibility and system aspects for the integration of
variable renewables ; market design; integrated modelling looking at
future energy systems and dealing with short-term issues
• Digitalisation and energy: analysing the impact of digital technologies on the future energy system
Selected papers will be presented and discussed in thematic and poster
sessions, circulated during the meeting, and also posted on the meeting
website.
Submission of papers
Full papers or long abstracts (minimum 1000 words) in .pdf version should have been submitted online before February 1st, 2019.
Please note that paper selection has become increasingly competitive in
recent years. Submissions that fully describe a complete analysis are
generally more likely to be accepted than long abstracts. In
particular, when submitting a long abstract, please ensure that the
study and results are sufficiently described to allow comparison with
full paper submissions. Each person can present only one selected
paper, although multiple submissions and co-authorship are allowed.
Please kindly complete one online form for each paper. Abstracts and
presentations submitted by the authors will be available online after
the event. Authors will have the option to opt out and choose not to
publish the abstracts or presentations on the conference website.
The IEA under its Clean Energy Transitions Programme offers the opportunity for sponsorship for individuals from developing and emerging economies, covering their conference fee, travel and accommodation costs. Please note in your paper submission if you want to apply for this sponsorship.
Abstracts and presentations submitted by the authors will be available online after the event. Authors will have the options to opt out and choose not to publish the abstracts or presentations at the conference website.

The selection of submitted papers and long abstracts was directed and
made by the IEW Program Committee, which included, among others, the
IEW co-directors and the 2019 co-organisers:
• Geoffrey Blanford, Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)
• Massimo Tavoni, RFF-CMCC European Instute on Economics and the Environment (EIEE)
• Bob van der Zwaan, Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN)
• Laura Cozzi, International Energy Agency (IEA)
• Timur Gül, International Energy Agency (IEA)
• Stéphanie Bouckaert, International Energy Agency (IEA)
• Uwe Remme, International Energy Agency (IEA)
